Var Zelph is a boss that is from a split into two parts (the other being Var Kurtz). At this point in the battle, you may have already depleted your AP from the variable arts on Val Kenus. However, if you managed to regain it (without using up some MP), do a quick variable attack on Var Zelph. The sooner you defeat Var Zelph, the easier the battle will be because Var Zelph has some nasty special attacks (as stated in the strategy guide quote above). After defeating Var Zelph, attack the Var Kurtz and finish off the battle once and for all!
